Holi – Festival of Colours

After a week of rain the sun came out, as it should, for Holi – Festival of Colours in the grounds of University College Cork, yesterday morning. I put on my best old clothes and headed down to get in the thick of things and shoot some of the action. It was an absolute blast.

Japan

I was on a business trip to Japan last week and while I spent most of my time in Tokyo, I also travelled to a remote area called Shonai. When I was asked by others in Japan of where else I was visiting very few knew of this location.

I took a flight from Tokyo’s Haneda airport – the city’s second airport. Now you would imagine that a place that is relatively unknown and, as I would later discover, only have a population of about 11,000 people would not be serviced by regular flights. But no, there are several flights each day and on the outward and return flight, both were full to capacity.

Flying into Shonai, it was hard not to be impressed by the beauty of the snow-capped mountains. Having coming from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, I was struck by calm and beauty of the location as we made our way to the university, some 20 km from the airport.

Before returning to the airport in the evening for my flight back to Tokyo, I had a little time to take a short walk to the river bank near the university. The air was fresh and crisp and the only sounds were those of birds chattering and the wind blowing in the trees. When I am away from home, I really try hard to make myself take in the reality of my surroundings. Time passes so quickly and often I find myself looking back and thinking: “Was I actually there?”

An hour from landing in Tokyo, I was back in Shibuya, back on the crossing. Again, I stopped to make myself take it all in and I could not help but feel that I had dreamt being out in the wilds of nature that afternoon.

facing it all

I was in class yesterday. To the left of my desk through the window is this little green area with rows of young trees and paths on either side. The students can be seen passing by on the way to and the way from their lectures and classes. Yesterday was a very cold day by Cork standards. Temperatures dropped below zero and there were little snow showers every now and then. It was freezing.
In class, I try not to be distracted by the passersby, but when I saw this old lady approaching, dragging her bag behind her, I could not help but notice.
This woman is familiar to me. She lives near my parents. She is a colourful character; loud and brash, sometimes even vulgar and abusive. One time, while driving I had to suddenly swerve to avoid hitting her. She was in the centre of the road shouting at the oncoming traffic. My wife, one time taking the bus, was verbally abused by her for no apparent reason.
She lives alone in a small house, overgrown with shrubbery. Callers to her door are treated with great suspicion. Stories of her chasing these callers with a stick from her door are heard with frequency.
She appears to inhabit a different world to others, or perhaps better said, she appears to have a different perception of the world to others. She shouts accusations at strangers. She is a source of ridicule for many. I have once or twice tried to engage with her, but impenetrable she is; locked in her own world.
However, she is brave and determined. Whenever I see her, her head is high, facing it all.
