2014: My favourite images – August

Writing about August on January 1st, 2015. Happy New Year! It is going to be a great year. Believe and achieve. That is my maxim for 2015. Everything will happen.

The first thing to happen is this continued review of last year’s photographs. In August, 54 photographs of mine went up on the two accounts. There was a mix of images from Cork, Dublin and Korea posted to the DSLR account. Photographs created on the iPhone followed the same pattern.

Looking back now, I see the short series of images I tend to present. There were these images taken in Korea of people with umbrellas.

But the ones that I love from August are those in this series taken in Daegu. These images are me getting close to my vision of how beautiful photography can be.

And my favourite image of the month: A Daegu delight.

With the iPhone, the one I love most is this taken of my brother in-law’s wife.

Thanks again to all. Happy New Year!

I was really delighted with the reaction to the short feature on mobiography yesterday and the accompanying blog post I did on mobile photography. Thanks to all for the visits, comments and emails.

Two images today from Berlin taken at night. The iPhone image is of a shop front in the Kreuzberg area of Berlin. A very simple photograph. I was attracted to the colours, light and the way the two pullovers remained so still.

December 21 2014

This year in Taipei I did a little experimenting with panning. A photographic technique I had not tried before. Taipei with its thousands of mopeds and motorbikes was a perfect location to try this out and I managed to get one or two good results.

A few weeks back in Berlin, I tried to get a few of passing cyclists, but seeing as my intention to do this only occurred as I saw the cyclist approach, the result is not as I would have expected. However, the white glow of the wheels was an unexpected, but pleasing result. Photography is fun, and there is nothing funner than standing on the footpath swaying and swerving those hips as you try to get a cyclist in motion as they pass. It is even more fun after a drink! Try it.

This is another I got with that fun app 1-hour photo on the iPhone. I love that app so much. It gives such beautiful tones for black and white images. I love harsh sunlight too.

Have a good Sunday.

December 20 2014

Was very surprised to learn that yesterday’s DSLR image was a famous TV news presenter in Germany – Thomas Roth. It made me feel like a paparazzi. I wonder would he be pleased with it if he came across it, or would he see it as an invasion of privacy.

Today’s image is quite similar. Again, shot through the windows of a subway train in Berlin. You can make what you want of it.

Locations and working a scene. I loved the backdrop of this location, the bright neon of the Photoautomat sign and the lonely light that shone in the empty booth. I had in mind a hope that someone would come and sit in and get their portraits taken. But of course that was not going to happen. I really do wonder if these booths make money; do people actually still use them? They must I guess.

December 10 2014

Just discovered this is my 250th blog post. Wow! Thanks to all who come and read my musings and look at my photos.

Coming to an end with photographs from my October trip to Copenhagen. Without doubt, for me, this has produced some of my most favourite photography. I was very lucky with the sunlight and also having a bicycle allowed me to get out and about and see much more of the city than I could ever have managed if I had only been walking.

The iPhone image is one I really love. When I approached from the rear of this statue I knew exactly what it reminded me of – my bokeh heads. How cool! It is in fact a statue of Atlas with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Poor Atlas – reminds me of myself at times. This image has been brought to you by Snapseed.

And as we near the end of Copenhagen images how appropriate there should be one of a cyclist. What a wonderful city Copenhagen is! Being a bike enthusiast Copenhagen for me is heaven.

This image is brought to you by Lightroom.

December 9 2014

December – what a bleak month. Dark mornings, dark days and Christmas!

Had a few days in Berlin last week when I attended the excellent Online Educa conference. It was excellent. HAve been to Berlin a few times, always to attend this conference and always at this time of the year. Not the best of times to see Berlin, I think. The sun rises late and sets early. It is cold and you don’t want to spend too much time outside. I like Berlin and would like to see what it is like in the height of summer.

As you can imagine, in my free time I tried to get in as many opportunities to get out and shoot. Will post some of these in the weeks to come, but there are still some Copenhagen photos I want to show. You can see some of the iPhone Berlin shots here on Instagram.

I love street art. It adds so much if it is done well and in Copenhagen it sure is. This is a street in Vesterbro. I got a number of photographs of this, both with the DSLR and the iPhone.

The iPhone shot took time. I wanted a human element for the composition, but had to wait for a passerby to pass by.

Final in the series brings this to your screens – a man framed in a slight blur, wearing a light blue pullover and darker denim trousers standing before a piece of predominantly blue art that has a standard lamp with a blue lampshade to its right. Serendipitously photographic.

To add to the series, here is one taken with the iPhone, using the app – Manual. I had been trying to get blurred images with the native iPhone camera – but the image stabilisation is just too damn good. Manual allows full control – besides aperture. Have a good week. Surprise yourselves.

November 15 2014

This photographic journey is fun. Images that I know I deleted before are images that I am excited about now. Before, when framing a shot, if someone entered the frame, I would automatically delete it. Now I like the depth and intrigue an unintended intrusion into frame can create. I like it so much that next time I am out I intend to allow these intrusions. This is a photograph I took in Copenhagen. A lot of the shots were taken between 5 – 7 in the evening. The fading light of the day is so nice at this time.

Self-correcting coincidences

And here is an example of this light that lingers late in autumn evenings.

This will probably be the last in this little series of blurred shots from Copenhagen. Have many more and they may see the light of day later, or maybe not. I found it very hard to settle on a uniform style for the processing of these shots. Maybe I did not need to but I need to move things on a little.

Precision

Here is an image taken with the iPhone from a nice evening I spent with this fine photographer, Thomas Toft. Thomas and I went on a cycle around Copenhagen and we stopped off in a subway station to take some photographs.
