Tokyo at night

A little series of images shot on my last trip to Tokyo, in and around Shibuya. All photographs made with Nikon D7000 and edited in Lightroom.

Shibuya, Shibuya

I read once, that those you see in your dreams are those you have seen in real life. Those passersby whose faces may never have registered with you, but somehow make their way in and resurface in dreams. Makes some sense, doesn’t it? The shutter of the eye snapping relentlessly and searing them to memory and they seeping into dreams.

Tokyo

Tokyo

How many people have I passed in my life, I wonder? How many faces? Millions perhaps. Sufficient stock for endless dreams, no doubt.

Shibuya

Shibuya

Tokyo is a bit like that with the Shibuya Scramble Crossing. In any given time up to two thousand people cross. Two thousand faces. There is about a four to five minute interval between the red man and the green man at the crossing. With the green man, there are two minutes for those two thousand people to hurry across. The waiting crowd swells and surges as soon as the green man signals. It is an electrifying feeling to be amongst it.

Shibuya

Shibuya

It is endlessly engaging in Shibuya.

Blur will save the world

Blur will save the world!

I remember being so apprehensive about posting purposely blurred photographs to Flickr, thinking people would ridicule the images. I felt I should adhere to some sort of photography ethos and try to keep everything in focus, but also felt so drawn to creating blurred imagery. Often asked about what it is about blur that I love so much and the simple answer is that I love the possibility that it allows. I have a simple belief about art – one that gets me into arguments (some people!). The belief is that once an artist shares their work, they cease to own the interpretation of it. The interpretation is transferred to the viewer, reader, etc. With blur, I feel, the viewer has a freedom that in-focus photography might limit. Blur has a beauty also. Ya, sure it is not for everyone, but that is a good thing, no?

For me, when I am creating blur images it is a more deliberate process; calmer and more patient than shooting street. A different experience; a different sense of being in the moment. I shot this series of images in about 5 minutes on a hot night in Jakarta on a Nikon D7000. All are processed in Lightroom.

iPhone 6s Portraits

As a photographer, I am always looking for new ways of seeing things – news ways of creative expression. Portraits are not something I tend to do. Sure, I have so many candid street portraits, but straight up – asking someone to pose for a portrait – I rarely do.  But I have embarked on a series of portraits using the native iPhone 6s camera and shooting through the Olloclip macro x7 lens.
These portraits are intentionally blurred. I feel blur can reveal, and conceal at the same time. As a photographer, it allows me to present something that is personal – as some of these portraits are of family – and retain a level of privacy. As a viewer, it allows you to bring into focus what only you see. It may be a smile, a tilt of the head, an intensity of gaze or just the fluid form and colour.
It’s yours – see it as you want.
These are works in progress. I am sharing them now to see how they look together – to decide what direction to take the project on. Hope you like them. Feedback welcome.

Photographs

We are making our way through the alphabet for storms this winter. F for Storm Frank has arrived and the rain and the wind is truly wild. This type of weather is so miserable, but then again with all the flooding it does make for some beautiful reflections. Out for a walk, braving the elements, with my brother yesterday we passed the flooded Lee fields and I had to stop to get a photograph of these beautiful reflections of the trees in the water. These images are straight out of the camera with only a flip applied in Snapseed.

Trees need to cheer the fuck up

This photograph was made on an autumn afternoon in Vilnius. I set out with the sole intention of creating blurred photography. The old town in Vilnius is a great location for this.

January 11 2015

I like making New Year’s resolutions and usually I am quite good at keeping them. I don’t make many and I tend not to try to make radical changes. One of the resolutions I have made is in relation to my photography and involved, amongst other things, in deciding to look back before looking forward. I want to complete the series of images from Asia last year and also some others taken in 2014. Once that has been completed, the work begins. Stay tuned for updates.

Efforts to remain unseen

Here is the final one in the series of images. This one is unlike the others as it is in colour. Hope you like it. May come back to this style later in year. We will see.

This is another image from Berlin taken with the 1-hour Photo app on the iPhone. I like this app so much.

they could recover
